En posant cette question, et en tentant d’y répondre, Canal participe à l’émergence d’un mouvement en faveur du concept de réversibilité en architecture. S’il est entendu qu’un bâtiment peut avoir plusieurs vies, l’effort est devenu démesuré pour y parvenir, tant l’architecture est le plus souvent contrainte par sa programmation initiale et sa reconversion progressivement complexifiée par la multiplication des normes.
L’idée d’habiter, travailler, enseigner… successivement dans un même lieu engage à dissocier programme et procédé constructif dès la conception, au bénéfice d’une souplesse d’usages dans une géométrie libérée.
« Penser réversible », c’est anticiper l’évolution d’un édifice avant même sa construction, pour alléger au maximum les adaptations et leur coût, lors de sa transformation. Un principe qui pourrait être une des réponses à l’endémique crise de l’habitat. Dans un contexte sociétal, économique et immobilier où la pénurie de logements est concomitante à la vacance de millions de mètres carrés de bureaux pour cause d’obsolescence, Canal envisage un manifeste en forme d’enquête, comme un outil de réflexion et de travail à destination de tous ceux – décideurs, conseils, investisseurs, constructeurs, architectes ; professionnels ou étudiants – qui souhaitent se pencher sur cette hypothèse de recherche. Il semblait d’utilité publique pour l’entreprise de réunir en un seul ouvrage un large panel d’informations et de réflexions critiques sur la question du réversible en architecture.
« Nous l’avons construit en identifiant pas à pas les différentes entrées nécessaires à la compréhension globale des enjeux induits » témoigne l’agence, avant de poursuivre : « Ainsi, établir le diagnostic de la mutation des modes de vie pour mieux « ré-habiter la société », clarifier l’usage des termes afférant à la transformation des bâtiments, reconnaître les acteurs en jeu sur l’échiquier de la construction et de l’aménagement, mobiliser des exemples historiques et d’actualité éclairants, identifier les perceptions, les projections ou les réticences, mesurer les contraintes et les freins autant que les opportunités de changement, proposer en tant qu’architectes un dispositif constructif, industrialisé, crédible pour une réversibilité efficiente, ouvrir l’imaginaire vers des scénarios anticipateurs ont paru autant de clés utiles à une approche éclairée du sujet. »
